In the early 1940s, Charles and his wife, Ray, experimented with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. After their experimentation with plywood, they turned their attention to what Charles called the "fantastic things being made of wire." From welded wire rods, they created a number of furniture items, including the Wire Base Table. One of the many uses the Eameses had for this compact table in their own home was the chanoyu, or traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Day 4 Winner of the Eames Giveaway

All the entries for Day Four of the 12 Days of Eames have been counted, and we have a winner! Our congratulations to Megan Brown from Colorado; she's won her own Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair!
In the early 1940s, Charles and his wife, Ray, experimented with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Navy in 1942 to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells molded under heat and pressure. After World War II, they adapted the technology to create inexpensive, high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced. The process eliminated the extraneous wood needed to connect the seat with the back, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. The chair is in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.
Send us a photo of yourself with your new beautiful chair, Megan! We'd love to see how perfect it looks in your home.. Remember: enter once per day, folks - you'll have a chance to win any prize from the remaining days of the giveaway! We'll announce Day Five's winner around 5 P.M. on December 5th.
